Christian Rodriguez joined the TRUE Mentors community in December of last year after finding out about our programs through Jersey Cares. Friendly, motivating and understanding, he initially built rapport with our youth during Tuesday night Enrichment Clubs. Always willing to help and learn, Chris interviewed for an intern position in the Spring and has helped with tasks for Enrichment Clubs, Mentoring and Salesforce operational duties. During remote learning he participated in our weekly virtual lessons including Nurses Week: Thank You Cards and Art and LGBTQ+ Rights. He decided to extend his internship during the summer months and is currently helping with the matching process for mentees.
When asked about his experience while interning with TRUE Mentors he replied, “Prior to joining TRUE Mentors, I had no experience at all working with youth, I remember signing up for my first enrichment club being absolutely terrified. Luckily, I adjusted quickly and have absolutely loved my experience as a volunteer and intern. I have gained skills that I would have not learned anywhere else. I am so proud to have had such an amazing experience and will forever be grateful to TRUE Mentors for allowing me to join their team.”
Chris has also proven his passion for youth work and has recently landed a position as counselor for the Jubilee Center, which will run a five week outdoor summer day camp. In the fall, Chris will enter his second year at Hudson County Community College where he is pursuing a degree in Psychology. His passion with community service has led him to become active with many other organizations including: Earth Keepers in Jersey City, where he helps with gardening at Liberty State Park and First Friends of NJ an NY, where he is a pen pal to detained immigrants. He is also President of the Environmental Club and Secretary of Sigma Kappa Delta, Students Against Ableism, and the LGBTQIA+ Club. We are TRUE-ly thankful to Chris and all his hard work and dedication to the TRUE Mentors mission and programs. We couldn’t ask for a better Intern to continue the work and help engage our youth!
