Volunteer Spotlight – Marie Goczalk

Name: Marie Goczalk
Age: 31
Occupation: Financial Risk
Years Served at TRUE Mentors: Long Time (6 years)
I was first asked to volunteer for the organization by my friend, Susi Milligan, who was launching a mentorship program in Hoboken. For the first year, I helped out with the marketing team, but then transitioned into the role I am in now (Mentor Match Coordinator). It has been so exciting to see the program change and grow over the last six years. From our launch in January 2011 to where we are today; it has been great to watch up close.
As a mentor coordinator for the one-on-one matching program, I screen potential mentor candidates, help them get through the application process and ultimately get them matched with a mentee. I like the opportunity to meet adults in our community who are passionate about caring and loving the children in Hoboken. My favorite TRUE Mentors moments is being able to hear the success stories of mentor and mentee matches that I was able to help facilitate. To be able to hear about a child who was able to learn something new or experience something they hadn’t before because of their mentor. Being able to hear about a match that was successful and the impact on a child’s life is very rewarding.
On a personal level, I’ve been able to meet a lot of various TRUE Mentors volunteers over the year. I have really enjoyed my experience as part of the matching team where the mentor and mentee interviewers meet once a month to discuss our various candidates. I have been able to grow strong relationships with those who are part or have been apart of the team. Since joining TM, I have had the opportunity to participate in several community events, including multiple scavenger hunts and happy hours. Overall, the TRUE Mentor community is a great opportunity to meet and impact others within your community.
