History

TRUE Mentors is a 501-3C not-for-profit established in 2011 after previous one-on-one mentoring programs failed to align local youth with volunteers residing in their local communities.We work with at-risk youth residing in Hudson County, New Jersey between the ages of 7 – 18 (or high school graduation).

TRUE stands for TRUE Relationships Unearth Excellence. TRUE Mentors mission is to unearth the excellence of Hudson County youth through meaningful relationships.

Our vision is to help young people develop healthy, strong relationships that allow them to reach their full potential. We believe every child deserves support and an advocate committed to their growth and wellbeing.

Participants

We work with over 70 highly underserved, at-risk youth, the high majority (over 87%) of which come from low-income households. Over 80% of our participants identify as youth and over a quarter documented special needs.

What makes TRUE Mentors different?

TRUE Mentors volunteer-led and focus on aligning youth with volunteers within their close communities allowing for easier matches, increased engagement, and diverse offerings that are easily accessible to all parties. In addition to one-on-one, traditional mentoring, TRUE Mentors also offers age-targeted activities through Enrichment Clubs, our group mentoring program, and individualized educational support through the Homework Helpers program.

TRUE Mentors is a not-for-profit 501-3C organization based out of Hoboken, New Jersey, and servicing at-risk youth within all of Hudson County. We provide free one-on-one, group, and educational mentoring programs to at-risk youth between the ages of 7 – 18. TRUE Mentors locally based and focuses on aligning youth with volunteers within their city communities allowing for easier matches, increased engagement, and diverse offerings that are easily accessible to all parties. In addition to one-on-one, traditional mentoring, TRUE Mentors also offers age-targeted activities through Enrichment Clubs, our group mentoring program, and individualized educational support through the Homework Helpers program.
Volunteer commitments vary by program, but typically start at no less than two (2) hours per month through the school year.
TRUE Mentors works with over 80 at-risk youth that are highly underserved. Over 90% of our participants come from houses at or below the low-income threshold. In addition, over 80% of them identify as youth of color with a large percentage of First and Second-Generation Americans. Over 20% of the youth we work with have Independent Education Plans (IEPs), denoting a documented special need.
Though the generation support of our local and greater community, TRUE Mentors is able to provide all of our programs completely free of charge.
